Our mission
To offer an excellent, sustainable service to all those who are hearing impaired and to those associated with them, in order to enhance their immediate and future expectations and potential.

Who are we?
Hearing Support Christchurch is a non profit, non government funded organisation formed in 1938. Hearing Associations throughout New Zealand offer unbiased information about hearing matters to all, and a valuable first-port-of-call to the hearing impaired, their families and friends.

We rely on donations, subscriptions and grants to maintain our work. Bearing this in mind our web site has been created to provide you with information, references and assistance to hearing problems.

The work of Hearing Support Christchurch is coordinated by the President, the Board and the Services Co-ordinator. The Services Co-ordinator looks after the day to day running of the organisation.

How we can help?
We can assist you in the following ways:

Provide information on what/who is available to assist you in your daily activities and where and how to access
Provide information and demonstrate Assistive Listening Devices that may help you each day, such as telephones, TV, alarm clocks, personal listening devices
We can arrange for you to trial these devices in your own home for a short time before you decide what works best in your situation
In some cases (if you fit our criteria) we can assist financially to help you to own your own hearing device
Sale of hearing aid batteries at competitive prices - all sizes catered for
Sale of other miscellaneous items that may assist you such as badges

Rest Home Programme
We provide a service to Rest Homes to assist Rest Home Residents who struggle to clean and/or maintain their hearing aids. Our Field Worker visits facilities on a regular basis to carry out this essential work.
Dangerous Decibels Programme
Hearing Support Christchurch have recently introduced the DANGEROUS DECIBELS PROGRAMME to our Education arm. The Programme aims to educate children in Years 4 to 8 about the ear, hearing, decibels and how to prevent noise induced hearing loss. The presentations are educational, scientific, fun and interactive!
Rest Home Education
We provide education sessions for Rest Home/Retirement Village facility Staff regarding Hearing Loss in the Elderly and how to care for hearing aids. We also offer sessions for Rest Home/Retirement Village Residents on Living with Hearing Loss and Communication when Hearing Impaired.
Presentations to Community Groups
We can speak to your Community Group on anything relating to hearing loss.
We're involved in other projects that include:

Working with Hearing NZ to improve services and facilities for the hearing impaired, and to raise the profile of the association which is the premier organisation representing people with this disability
Producing and distributing items such as the yellow Customer hearing Stands that encourage both customers and staff to assist one-another in communicating effectively. Also Wallet Cards that the hearing impaired can carry with them in order to alert others of their difficulty in communicating and how people can best help (you may pick either of these up free of charge at our rooms)
The organisation and implementation of workshops relating to issues affecting the hearing impaired, such as Tinnitus, Communications Skills (etc)
Promotion of valuable services such as Captioned Movies and TV Subtitles.
